The lost art of hand lettering

Although there is a bit of a resurgence these days with type foundries like House Industries or Emigre, hand lettering seems to be a lost form of art. The beautifully rendered wordmarks above are from now defunct department stores that existed in the 1940’s. Hand lettering is a nice reminder that humans exist in a world of slick, clean typefaces.
